Notes from Fr. Tim
1) Bible Study Classes continue on Thursday evenings in the St. Joseph’s Sacristy at 7 pm. Now more than ever since we have space to grow, new members are always welcome!

2) This Wednesday after the 10 am Mass in Chapeau we will be viewing the 2nd presentation in the ‘Catholicism‘ series by Bishop Robert Barron in the Church sacristy. Each video is a little over 30 minutes in length and offers tremendous insights and lessons about what and why we believe what we do as Catholics. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the Gospel message and our faith. And don’t forget to mark your calendars for the first Friday of each month beginning with November 3rd when we will begin to watch ‘The Pivotal Players‘. This is a series that looks at major figures who played a ‘pivotal’ role in our Catholic history. The first DVD is a look at the life of St. Francis of Assisi.

3) We will be posting a breakdown of finances for the Chapeau Parish Supper that was held at the start of the month. Even though we are awaiting the arrival of one last bill, it is clear that it was another financial success which will allow us to pay for the heating of that church throughout the coming cold months of winter and spring. That’s something we can all be most grateful for!!!

4) On a personal note, I wish to share something with everyone. As I think many of our parishioners are aware, I suffered a severe burn-out a few years back near the end of my term as pastor in Mattawa. As a consequence of that event, I have had to battle the demon of depression pretty much constantly in the years that followed. Anyone who has had to deal with this illness knows that it can be extremely debilitating and paralyzing and it affects one’s ability to sometimes accomplish even the most basic of personal tasks. It’s come to my attention that these failings sometimes become a staple of local gossip and commentary. As a result, I’d like to suggest the following: If you see that I am struggling, please do me the kindness of asking me how I’m doing and let me know that you’re keeping me in your prayers, especially when it’s evident I am going through a rough time. Such supports as this go much further than you might realize in helping me to climb out of the hole that depression creates in my life. It is most assuredly far more helpful to me than just complaining among yourselves when you notice the evidence that I’m walking through a difficult time. I love being your priest and spiritual father and trust that despite my many flaws and failings, you appreciate me being here. I know therefore that I can count on your assistance in helping me to overcome this particular demon in my life by bringing your concerns and support directly to me when required. Thank you. Fr. Tim

R.I.P. Fr. Michael Costello

costello_fr_mike_in_redReverend Michael Raymond Costello, Catholic priest of the Pembroke Diocese, passed away peacefully on Friday June 23, 2017 in his 82nd year.

Father Mike, as he was affectionately known, will be missed by the many parishioners throughout the Ottawa Valley who became dear friends over his 55 years of dedicated service. He was born in Arnprior, Ontario in 1936, the youngest of Josephine and Joseph Costello’s seven children.  He will be greatly missed by his dear brother Dom (Bonita). Father  Mike was predeceased by his sisters Patricia (Des Sullivan), Loretta (Pete Tario), Audrey (Terry Mulvihill), Marj (Harry Powell) and his brother Gerv (Rose).  He was a much-loved uncle to twenty nieces and nephews.

Father Mike began his religious life at the age of 19, studying at St. Jerome’s College in Kitchener and St. Paul’s Seminary in Ottawa before being ordained in Arnprior in 1962. Father’s first summer appointment was Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Pembroke. He was then appointed at St. Alphonsus Parish in Chapeau, with charge of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission in Waltham and helped in Holy Spirit Mission in Nichabau, and Mission Notre-Dame du Lac, Desjardinsville. He then returned to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Pembroke in 1969. In 1973, he was assigned pastor to St. Edward Parish in Bristol, serving Shawville, Norway Bay and area.  In 1986, he moved to St. Thomas d’Aquin Parish in Astorville, Ontario.  In 2000, he returned to the Ottawa Valley to minister to Holy Name of Mary Parish in Quyon, St. Edward Parish in Bristol and Immaculate Conception in Bryson.  Bryson was later exchanged for Paroisse St. François d’Assise in Lac des Loups.

In addition to his parish work, Father Mike was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at St. Mary’s Teachers College in Chapeau, the Lorrain School of Nursing in Pembroke, Victoria Avenue High School in Shawville and John Paul II High School in Campbell’s Bay.  For almost 30 years, Father was a significant presence at the Shawville Hospital, serving the spiritual needs of all faiths.

Father Mike retired in October of 2016.  When he was not serving his parishes, his favourite place to be was at his cottage at Fort William, Quebec, hosting family and friends.  Father loved to regale those gathered with his many stories while sharing good food and much laughter.  He will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank his caregivers and the wonderful staff at the Shawville Hospital, especially Father’s dear friend, Dr. Earle Potvin.

All are invited to the Rite of Reception of the Body at the Holy Name of Mary Church in Quyon, Quebec on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at 2:00 pm.  Following the Rite of Reception, friends may pay their respects from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm and on Wednesday, June 28 at St. John Chrysostom Church in Arnprior, Ontario from 10:00 am. Mass of Christian Burial presided by His Excellency Michael Mulhall will take place at 11:00 am.  Interment to follow in the Malloch Road Cemetery, Arnprior.  Reception to follow at the St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall. Donations in Father Costello’s memory to the Holy Name of Mary Parish, St. Edward Parish or St. Paul the Hermit Parish Restoration Fund, or the Shawville Hospital would be appreciated.
