ST. THERESA’S -FORT WILLIAM: Will be having a mass on Sunday August 19th at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Michael Mulhall the intentions of this mass will be for all deceased cottage families of Fort William.

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1)’Come away to a quiet place’. This line from this weekend’s gospel inspired me years ago to name my cottage, “A Quiet Place’. Alas, given the renovations that have been ongoing there, it’s been anything but quiet so far this summer. Happily, those renovations are soon coming to a completion. But now I face the task of transporting a number of furniture items and a gazebo that have been stored in the garage in St. Joseph’s to the cottage to make the place ready before I host some summer visitors (brother priests) at various times during the month of August and I am turning to you for some help. If you have some free time this week and are handy with a wrench and screwdriver, would you consider helping me to get set up and ready to move there for the start of August? Please let me know if you are able and willing to help. I am very limited in what I can do, but I can ensure that at least there will be some ‘libations’ available to quench any thirst that might occur for those who can volunteer some time to help me out. Thank you for considering this personal request.

2) The annual Parish Draw tickets for St. Alphonsus will be available beginning this week. Once again the prizes are a homemade quilt and various cash prizes. This is an important component of the revenues we generate as part of our Parish Supper so we ask that each family either sell or purchase 10 books. Thank you for your continued assistance in this annual fundraising effort.

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1) Please pray for the repose of soul for Mrs. Beatrice (Bea) Battis (nee Conroy) who passed away at the nursing home in Fort Coulonge on Thursday. The arrangements for her funeral have yet to be finalized but will be posted on the parish website (uppontiacparishes.wordpress.com) once they are made.

2) Congratulations to Fiona Brennan, infant daughter of Jessica Kelly and Richard Brennan who was baptized in St. Joseph Church last Sunday. May she live a long life of faith and joy.

3) The financial statement of our revenues and expenses are available in each of the churches this weekend. A copy will be posted on the bulletin board at the entrances and others available for you to take one home. You will note that all the parishes are running a deficit at this point in the year. This is because: a) repairs that have been done to the rectory and churches, and b) the high oil bills that came from the endless winter of 2017-18. It isn’t a great concern though since we traditionally receive more revenue and fewer expenses in the 2nd half of each year. We were in a similar state at this point last year as well and yet each of the parishes ended the year in good shape. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to speak to me about them. If I don’t have the answer right away, I will research it and reply asap. I thank everyone very much for your generous financial support of each of the parishes.

4) The annual Parish Draw tickets for St.

5) Once again this weekend there will be strawberries for sale on the grounds of the Chapeau Gallery after the 10:30 am Mass with the proceeds going to support our Peruvian carpenter’s school project. Don’t be tardy in getting to the tent if you want to make a purchase as last week all the strawberries sold out very quickly!

6) Jesus sends out his disciples to spread the good news of the Kingdom in today’s gospel passage. If we want to be considered among his followers (and thus inherit the promised eternal life he offers) he expects us to do the same. So what have you done this week to accomplish that same end?

This week’s gospel passage unfolds a continuing theme of Mark’s Gospel: Who is Jesus? His kinfolk in Nazareth might know the carpenter, the son of Mary, but they do not know Jesus, the Son of God. Mark is foreshadowing Jesus’ rejection by his own people, the people of Israel. He is also reflecting on and trying to explain the situation of the community for which he wrote. While many of the first Christians were Jewish, Christianity took hold and flourished in the Gentile community. Mark’s community was mostly a Gentile community, who may have been experiencing persecution. By showing that Jesus himself was rejected, Mark consoles and reassures his first readers. He also prepares us to accept this possible consequence of Christian discipleship.

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1) I have a few cemetery issues to put before you. First, please remember that it is not permitted to plant flowers, shrubs, or trees anywhere in the cemeteries. Nor is it permitted to place anything on the ground in front, beside or behind a gravestone. We use lawn tractors to cut the grass and there is not enough space to drive around items placed on the ground. Therefore, any flowers or plants will be either mowed over or removed without notice. (NOTE: These rules are clearly marked on signs at all of our cemeteries.)

The second issue deals with headstones. Please remember that the care and condition of all gravestones and markers in Quebec are by law the responsibility of the family and not the cemetery. There are a number of markers and gravestones that are in a terrible condition particularly in the Old Chapeau Parish cemetery. ‘Perpetual care’ funds are used exclusively for ground maintenance and do not cover care for monuments. Some monuments currently have fallen over or broken into parts and lay on the ground. This is creating a major issue for the maintenance of the grounds and in some cases constitute a serious safety hazard. We ask families to please check the status of any family markers etc and take the necessary steps to repair those in danger of toppling or have already fallen. Headstones that have fallen into serious disrepair or are a danger to fall will be removed and disposed of by the parish by the end of this fall. I appreciate that this may cause distress for some families but insurance concerns require that we ensure the safety for anyone who walks through the cemeteries. I thank you in advance for helping to address this issue.

2) There will be fresh strawberries for sale in Chapeau on the Gallery grounds. 1/2 of the price will be put towards the Peruvian Carpentry School that we’ve adopted as the St. Alphonsus Parish mission project. We are aiming to raise at least $4,000 before the end of the year to help them get this project off the ground so extra donations are always welcome! Just look for the ‘Fr. Tim’s Project’ sign to find the berries.

3) We will be posting the 6-month financial statement for each parish within the next week or two. Feel free to give the office a call if you have any questions or want to come and pick up a copy for yourself.

4) Congratulations to Lance Godin and Erin Allard who were married in St. Alphonsus Church this weekend. Please pray for a long and happy life for them as a married couple.

5) Congratulations to the organizers of the Canada Day festivities in Sheenboro. Special thanks go out to Fr. Chris Shalla who stepped in at the last minute as the celebrant of the morning Mass. I know that he was warmly welcomed and appreciated by all who attended that service.

6) Here’s a little information about St. Bryce Mission in Costa Rica, the mission project that St. Paul the Hermit Parish has adopted. “Saint Bryce Missions currently has two active ministry sites in Costa Rica and soon in Myanmar, and we hope to continue to impact other communities globally. We have completed 10 chapel construction or renovation projects as part of our Faith in Action initiative and are actively engaged in the work of evangelization in these communities. We have created a growing social enterprise initiative for women in Costa Rica as well as an agricultural initiative in Tanzania as part of our Hope in Action programming. In 2013, we founded the St. Francis Emmaus Center in Costa Rica as part of our Love in Action programming to provide rest and recuperation time as well as support and health education to pregnant Cabecar mothers who lack access to health services.”

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1) We welcomed two new infant Catholics into the faith last weekend. Please remember to pray for Eva Rose Jean Lemaire (Gabriel & Stephanie) and Sawyer Louis Moreau (Joshua & Anna) that they will grow stronger in their faith each and day of their lives.

2) Congratulations to Michel Fleury and Mindy Gagnon who were married in Chapeau last weekend.

3) Our Pembroke diocese suffered a tremendous loss with the death of Fr. Howard Chabot on Wednesday evening. Not only was he a kind and talented pastor wherever he served but he was a true mentor and brother to his fellow priests. While I encourage everyone to pray for the repose of his soul, (none of us live a perfect life so we all need prayers) I can say without reservation that I would be happy if I could stand in his shoes before Christ at the end of my days on this earth.

4) HAPPY CANADA DAY to each and every parishioner. Don’t forget that if you are looking for someplace to go to celebrate our national birthday, the festivities in Sheenboro is well worth the short drive!

5) Congratulations to the graduating class of DWKS who receive their high school diplomas this weekend. Please pray for the continuing success of this great group of young men and women.

6) It is with GREAT joy and gratitude that we welcome Fr. Chris Shalla back to Sheenboro this weekend to celebrate the Canada Day Mass. Few priests are as respected and cherished in these parts as he is for his years of service both as an assistant in Chapeau and pastor of St. Joseph’s and Sheenboro. It is a real pleasure to have him back again, even if it’s just for one weekend. Ad multos annos Fr. Chris!!

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1) We welcome Bishop Mulhall among us this weekend as he confers the sacrament of Confirmation on the candidates who have prepared to receive it over the past seven months. On behalf of the candidates, their families, and our parish community we thank Bishop Mulhall for the kindness of celebrating this sacrament at our weekend Mass in Chapeau.

2) Our prayers and sympathies go out to the families of Denis Venne and Shirley Chaput who both recently died. May God grant to them peace in their time of bereavement and a merciful judgment to those for whom they grieve.

3) The main body of the Church in Chapeau will be closed from Monday to Friday this week as work is being done there as part of our ongoing repair and restoration program. We appreciate your cooperation by staying out of that sacred space this week.

4) Fr. Grant Neville was here last Sunday to celebrate the baptisms of three new infant Catholics. We welcome Hayden Belland, Myrabel Chafe and Finnley Juliusson.

5) Congratulations to Lindsay Sheppard and Darren Ranger who were married last weekend with the aid of Fr. Tom Fitzpatrick in Chapeau.

6) Anybody got some rhubarb to spare? I’m looking for some to put up in the freezer for my summer baking. In fact, I’m always open to receiving any extra produce from people’s gardens. If I can’t use it myself I share it with others who appreciate the fresh produce. (NOTE: Please don’t bury me with zucchini. I always get more of that than I can handle or freeze.)

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1) Last weekend was chock full of happy events! ‘Congratulations’ to Sara Conroy and Daniel Gawne who were wed in Chapeau on Saturday. ‘Welcome’ to Kendrick Rousell-Fleming (Karolann and Derek Fleming) and Beau Christopher Lorne Burton (Kristeen and Joshua Burton) who were baptized on Sunday. And of course ‘best wishes’ for the 13 children who received their first confession and communion too! Bravo to you all!

2) Bible Study is postponed this week as I will be out of town attending the wedding of a friend. Fr. Howard Chabot will replace me at the weekend masses and Fr. Tom Fitzpatrick will celebrate the wedding of Lindsay Sheppard and Darren Ranger on Saturday. Thank you to both of them for filling me for me and allowing me to attend the marriage ceremony in Dallas, Tx.

3) Well folks, we’ve finally had the St. Joseph’s bell tower repaired. When I asked the contractor (Irvcon Roofing) if they found any surprises when they began the work they stated that the only one was that the bell had not yet fallen through the roof! Thank God for that eh? Evidently, the decking that held it up was completely rotted through! But it has all been replaced and clad in rubber and metal to keep it watertight for many years to come. (The bell was forged in 1912.) All we need to do now is pay for the repairs (hint, hint).

4) Have you signed up to purchase any coffee in our Sheenboro fundraiser for St. Bryce’s Mission in Costa Rica yet? This group of volunteers works with expecting mothers and through their efforts, they have reduced the infant mortality rate by over 50% in the past 10 years. They are well deserving of our support. Coffee can be ordered through almost any parishioner from Sheenboro or by calling the Parish Office.

5) Pembroke Area Mission will be held at St. Columbkille Cathedral October 1-3, 2018. Please hold these dates open and mark your calendars now. Internationally known lay evangelist and author, John Pridmore, a former gangster from England who experienced a miraculous conversion will speak each evening at 7:15. One observer described his conversion as that of “a modern-day Saint Paul.” He had it all and it counted as nothing until he found ‘the pearl of great price’. Mr. Pridmore will also address student assemblies in Renfrew, Pembroke and Barry’s Bay. Read more about this mission in the soon to be released summer edition of Ecclesia.
